Happiness
It is very difficult to
define happiness. It is a state of mind when a
person feels no pain but only pleasure. The mood of happiness is
characterized by contentment, love, satisfaction and joy. A variety of
philosophical, religious, psychological and biological approaches have been
adopted to define happiness and identify its sources. Primarily happiness comes
through satisfaction. If somebody is satisfied with his/her present condition
he/she feels happy. Otherwise he/she will be unhappy. Humans are driven by
aspirations. If someone's aspirations are not fulfilled he/she will fall in
great depression. And if fulfilled, he/she will be raised to the heaven of bliss. So happiness has two aspects: first,
a state of well-being and contentment, and second, a pleasurable or satisfying
experience. Many great men have defined
happiness in their own ways. According
to Aristotle, "Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole
aim and end of human existence." Mahatma Gandhi says, "Happiness is
when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony." Ayn
Rand says, "Happiness is that state of consciousness which proceeds from
the achievement of one's values." William H. Sheldon says, "Happiness
is essentially a state of going somewhere, wholeheartedly, one-directionally,
without regret or reservation." All in all, everybody wants to be happy in
life and some only get it this time or other. Only the person who has satisfied
himself/herself through his/her good deeds gets it.
