A Good Citizen
A Good citizen is a
person who respects the other citizens and their rights, is involved in
community problems and contributes, according to knowledge and skills, for the
sake of community in both, local and the state level. He or she is a valuable
asset of a country. There are many opinions as to what constitutes a good
citizen. Theodore Roosevelt said, "The first requisite of a good citizen
in this Republic of ours is that he shall be able and willing to pull his
weight." Education is most of the time viewed as a prerequisite to good
citizenship, in that it helps citizens make good decisions and deal with
demagogues who would delude them. He/she has certain responsibilities towards
the state, just as the state has certain responsibilities towards him. He must
be loyal to his motherland, to have firm and deep faith in the welfare of his
country, abide by the traffic rules and so on. He must be vigilant against the
enemies of the country. At the same time he must not do something which may
help the anti-nationalists or the enemies of the country. He should have no
sympathy for law breakers, and he should help the state in their arrest. He
must do all he can to make the criminals feel that all respectable people are
against them. A good citizen takes intelligent interest in politics, so that he
may use his vote for the good of the country and the nation. In fine it is to
say that a good citizen is an idol whose activities, thought and updated
knowledge lead him, his society and his country to the way to prosperity and
happiness.
