Folk Music of Bangladesh
Folk Music songs and
music of a community, uninfluenced by any sophisticated musical rules or any
standard music styles. Bangladesh has a rich folk music which includes both
religious and secular songs. Folk music has served the purpose of documenting
the lives of the people and was widely patronized by the rulers. It comprises a
long tradition of religious and regular song-writing over a period of almost a
millennium. These songs are sung with the traditional musical instruments such
as the tabla ektara, dotara etc. However, folk songs also have some categories
such as the Palligiti, Bhatiali, Bhawaiya, Jari, Sari, Gambhira, Lalongiti,
Palagaon and so on. Bhatiali is the music of fishermen and boatman, almost
always tied by a common ragas sung solo where as Gambhira (originated in Chapai
Nawabganj) performed with a particular distinctive rhythm and dance with two
performers, always personifying a man and his grand father, discussing a topic
to raise social awareness. Moreover Jari songs involving musical battle between
two groups. It is to be noted that Kirtana is very famous to the Hindu
communities which is mainly a devotional song depicting love to Hindu God
Krishna and his (best-known) wife, Radha. In fine it is to say that folk music
has a great influence over the entire communities of Bangladesh. So to make
alive them is our solemn duty.
